smoking Cessation service

What is the stop smoking community pharmacy service?

This is a service that allows you to receive professional help from your local community pharmacy to stop smoking.

What happens when I go to the pharmacist?

Our in store pharmacist will ask you about your smoking and assess your addiction to nicotine, your smoking habit and motivation to quit. They will then recommend the best method for you to stop smoking. This may include information about the importance of preparation when stopping smoking as well as recommending a nicotine replacement product. They will give you a stop smoking booklet, which will have information about the importance of preparation when stopping smoking.

If appropriate, you will receive your nicotine replacement product on prescription directly from the pharmacist, which means that you do not need to visit your GP. You will also receive professional support and advice. You can use this service for 12 weeks.

What happens if I can't attend every week?

If you can't manage to attend every week, it's important that you tell the pharmacist so they can make sure you do not run out of nicotine replacement. We know that when you are trying to stop smoking, you are more likely to relapse if you do not receive the correct level of support, especially in the first four weeks of stopping.

Will I have to pay for my nicotine replacement?

This service is currently free for people living and working in Scotland.
